Teaching at the UC Washington Center

The University of California Washington Center, helps carry out the University's mission of research, teaching and service in the nation's capital. The UC Washington Center is
a residential, instructional and research center representing all the UC Campuses; it provides students, both undergraduate and graduate, and faculty from the University of California with opportunities to research, work, study and live within rich cultural, political and international heritage of Washington DC. In May of 2007, we celebrated the UC Washington Center's sixth anniversary, having sent well over 6,000 students (UC-wide) through this prestigious program, fondly known as "UCDC".

As part of UC-Riverside's contribution to the Washington Center, UCR sends a faculty member to teach and work at the center every academic quarter. In February of each year, an announcement is sent out to faculty asking for applications from those interested in spending a quarter or more in residence in Washington D.C. for the upcoming academic year.

Faculty responsibilities include:

  • teaching one elective course open to students from the entire UC system,
  • conducting a weekly seminar with UCR students to orient and interest them in the historical and fundamental resources in Washington, D.C.
  • supervising a UCR graduate student who works as a teaching assistant to aid faculty in teaching the elective course and the UCR Washington seminar.

Faculty receive a housing and travel allowance for the quarter(s) spent in residence in Washington, and their departments receive funds to replace their courses. Faculty generally stay in efficiency apartments in the Washington Center building, located in downtown Washington blocks from the White House and close to the Metro lines.

Interested faculty are asked to submit a letter of application and a short CV to the Washington Center Steering Committee by February 15. The letter should:

  • explain your goals while in Washington DC
  • describe a selection of two different elective courses you would offer (only one will be selected. (The course(s) should be appealing to a broad range of students and transferable between UC campuses)
  • indicate whether this course is currently offered at UCR or needs to
    be created
  • specify which quarter(s) you would like to participate
  • include information about your vision for the UCR seminar - what approach you would use to introduce students to the resources in DC.

A support letter from your Departmental Chairperson must also be included with your application.

Letters should be sent to:
